Gap Year Advantage

The advantage of gap year is that you have enough time to think about your career.Going on a gap year offers students an exciting opportunity to see the world, follow a passion, make a difference, or take a much needed break from structured academics.

A gap year isn’t a vacation, and is actually more of a “time on” than a “time off.” Most gap year students go on structured programs which usually fall into one of the following categories:

- Volunteer abroad or domestically

- Help the environment or study conservation issues

- Explore an interest in the arts

- Challenge yourself in the outdoors

- Learn about another culture

- Go on an adventure travel trip

- Improve your academics in a “post graduate year”

Many independent-minded students craft their gap year without the benefit of structured programs, and feel that they have equally strong experience, often for a lower cost.

The list of attributes of a seasoned gapper can go on and on: Independent, mature, focused, re-energized, or self-directed are some words commonly used to describe students who have returned from a gap year. They usually return to college invigorated and with purpose. The gap year advantage is a proven by-product of a successful gap year, and one which is mentioned by deans of admission at top colleges.
